Project: T-shirt art smock / Projet: tablier blouse

I wanted to do a fingerpainting and handprint project with my oldest for Valentine's Day, but first I needed something for her to wear over her clothes so she wouldn't get them covered in paint. I didn't have anything child sized but I did have some old shirts, so I decided to look on the Internet for ideas. Since I also don't have a sewing machine it needed to be no-sew. I found a few websites that could be interesting and ended up using one of the tutorials to make a smock out of an old T-shirt. Five minutes later I had the perfect smock for her to wear.

First, I made one cut up the back of the T-shirt. Next I made two small cuts about halfway down the big one. I then cut upwards paralleled the big cut until I made it to the collar. Then I cut parallel to the big cut from the bottom of the T-shirt up almost to where I started to cut for the first ties (see photos for a better idea of what I mean). And there you have it - I had a shirt that can be easily tied at the neck and the waist. Though the shirt is much too long for her and a little bit loose around the shoulders, I think it's perfect because the sleeves cover her arms almost completely which is necessary when you're working with messy stuff. This smock was quick and easy and I'm really happy I found The Creative Recycler's tutorial.

Je voulais faire un projet permettant à mon aînée de peindre avec les doigts pour la Saint-Valentin, mais d'abord j'avais besoin de quelque chose qu'elle pourrait porter sur ses vêtements pour ne pas les tâcher. Je n'avais rien chez moi mais j'ai trouvé quelques vieilles chemises au me semblaient prometteuses donc j'ai décidé de chercher sur Internet pour des tutoriels de fabrication de tablier blouse pour enfants. Comme je n'ai pas non plus une machine à coudre le tutoriel devait être sans couture. J'ai trouvé quelques sites intéressants et j'ai fini par trouver un tutoriel pour fabriquer un tablier blouse à partir d'un vieux T-shirt. Cinq minutes plus tard, j'avais un tablier parfait pour tout genre de projet.

Tout d'abord, j'ai fait une coupe verticale dans le dos du t-shirt. Ensuite, j'ai coupé sur les deux cotés à mi-hauteur de cette première coupe. J'ai ensuite coupé vers le haut en parallèle de la grande coupe jusqu'au col du t-shirt. Puis j'ai coupé parallèlement à la grande coupe du bas du t-shirt jusqu'au milieu du dos (les photos le montrent beaucoup mieux que je puisse le décrire). Et voilà, un tablier blouse avec des attaches au cou et à la taille. Le tablier blouse est trop long pour ma fille et un peu grand aux épaules, mais je préfère que ça soit comme ça, car les manches couvrent complètement ses bras, ce qui est nécessaire lorsque l'on fait de l'art à cette age! Ce tablier blouse est facile à réaliser et je suis vraiment contente d'avoir trouver le tuto de Creative Recycler. (en anglais)

Project: Felt Christmas Ornaments / Déco de Noël en feutre

Christmas 2012, my mom gave me a magazine that had a bunch of holiday projects in it and one of them was a series of felt little animal ornaments. We had thought we might have enough time to do them together when I was in BC but is it happens we ended up getting a bit too busy to work on a project so I took the pattern back home with me. It got somewhat forgotten as I progressed through my pregnancy, but I found the pattern again in October and decided to start on it as soon as I had some free time. I don't think I really started working on the project until November, though I picked up the extra felt I needed sometime in October (my mom had already given me some of the felt I needed).  I kind of panicked a little bit at the beginning of December because the tree was up but the ornaments still weren't done so I worked quite hard through December to finish them. I'm not the most neatest hand sewer but I managed to do quite well I think, and I'm pretty happy with how they turned out. I'm sure it would have only taken an afternoon if I hadn't had a baby and a toddler to look after! They were fairly simple overall and I think they'd be fun to do with an older child who was learning how to sew. I can't pick a favorite - they're all so cute!

The process: I first scanned the pattern outlines and then reprinted them with harder card stock so that I can maybe use the outline again. I cut out each piece of the pattern, then traced the corresponding piece onto the right color of felt. For the darker felt I used a fabric pencil so there wouldn't be any marks. I cut out each piece being careful to keep everything together since some of the pieces were quite small. Next I sewed the features onto each animal (the nose, the eyes etc.) I sewed one wing onto each of the owls - the second wing was put to the side to be sewn when I was doing the body. Then I sewed the bodies together with the last of the body parts, including a ribbon at the top to hang the ornaments on the tree. I left a small space at the bottom through which to put the stuffing. Once the stuffing was done I sewed up the last seam.

Noël 2012. Ma mère m'a donné un magazine avec un tas de projets de saison, et l'un d'entre eux était une série de suspensions en feutre. Nous avions pensé que nous pourrions les fabriquer ensemble pendant mon séjour, mais nous avons fini par manquer du temps, donc j'ai amené le modèle chez moi. Je l'ai oublié pendant ma grossesse, mais je l'ai trouvé à nouveau en octobre et j'ai voulu le commencer le plus tôt que possible. Malheureusement je n'ai pas commencé le projet avant fin novembre, mais j'ai acheté un peu de feutre supplémentaire en octobre (ma mère m'ayant déjà donné quelques feuilles). Début décembre je paniquais un peu car le sapin était décoré mais je n'avais toujours pas avancé, mais j'ai travaillé quelques jours d'affilés pour les terminer. Je ne suis pas experte de la couture mais je crois qu'ils sont réussis.  Je suis sûre que j'aurais pu tout faire dans un après-midi si seulement je n'avais pas eu 2 enfants en bas âge à ma charge! En fin de compte c’était assez simple comme projet et je pense qu'il serait amusant de faire des petits animaux similaires avec un adolescent qui vient d'apprendre la couture à la main. Je ne peux pas choisir mon préféré - ils sont tous si mignons!

Le déroulement: j'ai scanné le patron puis je l'ai réimprimé avec du papier plus épais pour pouvoir le réutiliser de nouveau. J'ai découpé chaque pièce et j'ai tracé les formes sur la bonne couleur de feutre. Pour les feuilles sombres j'ai utilisé un crayon pour tissu pour éviter de laisser des traces permanentes sure le feutre. J'ai ensuite découpé les morceaux de feutre en prenant soin de tout garder ensemble, car certains étaient assez petits. Après, j'ai cousu les traits sur chaque animal (nez, yeux etc.) J'ai cousu une aile sur chacune des chouettes - j'ai mis la deuxième de côté pour le coudre en même temps que le corps. Puis j'ai cousu les deux moitiés du corps ensemble avec les membres de chaque animal et un ruban pour l'accrocher sur le sapin. J'ai laissé une petite ouverture en bas pour fourrer avec du coton ouaté. Une fois fourrés, j'ai fermé chaque ouverture.
