Knitting: Dishcloth / Tricot: Torchon

I used some yarn that my grandmother gave me to knit my first dishcloth. This project was particularly enjoyable - short and sweet. It took me a week to finish, but since I tend to only be able to knit for 10 minutes here and 15 minutes there, I'm pretty happy with the length of time (though, to be fair, I did knit about half of it while waiting at the lab during my gestational diabetes test.) I had never done either a yarn over or a knit 2 together before this pattern, and I'm happy with what I have learned. It was interesting to use plastic needles this time - it gives a whole new feel to knitting. Though I wasn't especially happy with them for the k2tog - I don't think the needles were pointy enough. My k2tog side was tighter than the yo side, so the cloth turned out a little lopsided. But with a wash or two and a bit of blocking, I'm sure it will look fine in the end.

J'ai utilisé une pelote que ma grand-mère m'a donné pour tricoter mon premier torchon. Ce projet a été particulièrement agréable - bref et concis. Il m'a fallu une semaine pour le terminer, mais puisque j'ai tendance à seulement tricoter pendant 10 minutes par ci et 15 minutes par là, je suis assez contente (bien que, pour être juste, j'ai tricoté environ la moitié du torchon en attendant au laboratoire pendant mon test de diabète gestationnel.) Je n'avais jamais fait deux des mailles nécessaires pour ce patron auparavant (jeté et tricoter deux mailles ensemble à l'endroit), et je suis heureuse de les avoir appris, surtout avec un modèle assez simple. Il était intéressant d'utiliser des aiguilles en plastique - ça donne une toute nouvelle sensation. Bien que je n'étais pas particulièrement contente de les utiliser pour tricoter deux mailles ensemble - je ne crois pas que les aiguilles étaient assez pointues. En plus, le côté où j'ai tricoté deux mailles ensemble est plus serré que l'autre. Mais avec un lavage ou deux, ou après le bloquage, je suis sûr que tout ira bien.

Knitting: Cowl / Tricot: Snood

Sorry it has taken me so long to get to this! Things have been busy around here lately, especially when it comes to knitting. I seem to be really enjoying this new hobby.

The project I have completed is called the GAP-tastic cowl by Jen Geigley (the link connects to Ravelry, a site I have been using almost exclusively for finding online patterns. You have to be a member to see the link, though.) I used yarn I had bought when I first decided to start knitting, a lovely soft and chunky yarn from Phildar, well-known here in France.

This project had a lot of firsts for me, some of which were more positive than others. For example, this was the first time I knit in seed or moss stitch, and though I had a bit of trouble remembering which stitch I had done last when I stopped knitting (this was only my second project, so I found it difficult to distinguish the purl and knit stitches from each other). I had to restart more than once due to knitting twice in a row and missing the mistake, I got into a good rhythm quite quickly. Knitting in the round on circular needles was also new, but went very smoothly, especially with the help of a great video about knitting an invisible join in the round.

The technique that caused me the most problems was adding a new skein while knitting in the round. I have no problem when it's flat knitting, since it's easy enough to finish a row and then start with the new skein. But I found that since I was still unused to how much yarn I needed to complete one round that I would get halfway through a round or almost to the end and realize I needed to start a new skein right then or I'd be in trouble, and at least at first it ended up being pretty messy. Now that I'm finished the cowl, I think I have adding new skeins in the round more or less figured out, and next time it shouldn't be as messy. Hopefully.

Overall, I enjoyed this project and learned a lot, both about knitting and about myself and my patience with my mistakes. It's far from perfect, but I'll be happy to wear it next winter and tell people that I made it myself.

Désolé pour le retard! La vie a été assez compliquée ces derniers temps, surtout quand il s'agissait de tricot. Il me semble que je profite vraiment  de ce nouveau passe-temps.

Le projet que je viens de terminer s'appele GAP-tastic Cowl par Jen Geigley (le lien se branche sur Ravelry, un site que j'ai utilisé presque exclusivement pour trouver des patrons en ligne. J'ai utilisé une laine que j'avais acheté quand j'ai décidé de commencer à tricoter, un beau fil doux de Phildar, bien connu ici en France.

Avec ce projet j'ai fait plein de choses pour la première fois, certains étant plus faciles que d'autres. Par exemple, c'était la première fois que j'ai tricoté en point de riz, et bien que j'ai eu un peu de mal à me souvenir de quel point j'avais fait en dernier quand je me suis arrêté (c'était seulement mon deuxième projet, donc j'ai eu du mal à distinguer le tricot à l'envers et le tricot à l'endroit). J'ai été obligée de recommencer plusieurs fois car j'ai tricoté à l'endroit deux fois d'affilée et ne me suis pas rendue compte de l'erreur, mais après j'ai pris un bon rythme assez rapidement. Tricoter en rond sur aiguille circulaire était également nouveau pour moi, mais tout s'est très bien passé, surtout avec l'aide d'une superbe vidéo sur la jointure invisible (lien en anglais).

La technique qui a provoqué le plus de problèmes était l'ajout d'une nouvelle pelote tout en tricotant en rond. J'en ai eu aucun problème quand je tricotais à plat, car il est assez simple de terminer un rang et puis démarrer avec la nouvelle pelote. Mais comme je suis toujours inexpérimentée en ce qui concerne la quantité de laine qu'il me faut pour terminer un rang, j’étais souvent à mi-chemin ou presque à la fin et me suis rendue compte que je devais commencer une nouvelle pelote ou je serais en difficulté, et au moins dans un premier temps l'ajout de la nouvelle pelote a fini par être assez moche. Maintenant que j'ai terminé le snood, je pense que j'ai plus l'habitude et la prochaine fois ça devrait se passer mieux. Si tout va bien, en tout cas.

Dans l'ensemble, j'ai bien aimé ce patron et j'ai beaucoup appris, tant sur le tricot que sur moi-même et ma patience avec mes erreurs. C'est loin d'être parfait, mais je serai contente de le porter l'hiver prochain et dire aux gens que je l'ai fait moi-même.

IP April / EC avril

Just a quick update. I have a post in the works about my finished cowl, but can't seem to find the pictures I wanted to put with it. Hopefully I'll get to that soon.

A general update for April: I have a few projects that I have recently started and some that are upcoming - all in all, a lot going on in terms of knitting!

Currently In Progress:
Dishcloth (new technique: Yarn Over, knit 2 together)
Baby blanket (new technique: knitting flat on circular needles, using fuzzy yarn - not as easy to see one's stitches!)

Upcoming:
Redo baby hat in the round (new technique: using double-pointed needles, or DPNs)

Also, as an aside, I wore some fingerless gloves that were given to me as a Christmas present to push the stroller in 6 degree weather and felt great. It's making me want to try out a pattern or two! Now the task will be to find one that I like and find some nice wool to go with it...

Juste une mise au point. J'ai un post en cours sur mon snood, mais je n'arrive pas à trouver les photos que je voulais mettre en ligne. J'espère que je vais pouvoir le faire bientôt.

Des nouvelles pour le mois d'avril: J'ai quelques projets que j'ai commencé récemment et autres qui sont à venir - dans l'ensemble, beaucoup de choses sur mes aiguilles !

Couverture de bébé (nouvelle technique : tricot à plat sur aiguille circulaire, laine fantaisie - pas toujours facile de voir les mailles!)

À venir :
Refaire le bonne de bébé en rond (nouvelle technique : l'utilisation d'aiguilles à double pointes DPNs)

Aussi, j'ai porté des gants sans doigts que j'ai reçu à Noël quand je suis sortie avec la poussette quand il a fait 6 degrés Celsius et je me suis senti bien. Cela m'a donné envie d'essayer un patron ou deux pour m'en faire d'autres! Maintenant, la tâche sera de trouver celui qui me plaît et trouver la laine aussi...
